Ramanujan (India) won the prestigious International
Federation for Journalists (tolerance)award for
"Mill On The Loss" which appeared
in The Indian Express on November 30, 2003.
The
Jury also took special note of her other entry
"Bridging the Divide In This Small Town",
The Indian Express, December 9, 2003, while coming
to their decision.
It
is hardest to retain compassion while reporting
on communally charged situations and decrying
the violation of basic human rights. Yet Ms. Ramanujans
writings display an outstanding quality of compassion,
empathy and respect for human dignity. Mill
On The Loss is an incisive report on the
economic basis of communal hatred. This piece
explores the socio-economic roots of communal
tension in certain areas of Maharashtra.
