Media ethics
Distasteful journalism

Dear Editor,

A news item from The Asian Age, dated July 16 with a London dateline penned by Aditi Khanna, talks about Diana's prowess in bed which I think is in very bad taste for the following reasons:

(a) It talks ill of a woman who is no more and cannot defend herself,
(b) It talks about a woman who was better known for her philanthrophic bent of mind rather than for her prowess in bed,
(c) It relies on secondary sources of information - James Hewitt - who we cannot rely on for authenticity since the person he is talking about and his relationship with her cannot be verified any more,
(d) It is written by a woman - and an Indian woman journalist at that - who does not feel anything about sensationalising another woman who is dead,
(e) It has been published in a national paper which many are going to read and get the wrong message about the wrong person at the wrong time,
(f) It reflects a biased sense of projecting news that the paper could very well have done without.

Comments on this issue would perhaps be welcome by other NWMI members.
