Sweta Ramanujan (India) won the prestigious International Federation for Journalists (tolerance)award for "Mill On The Loss" which appeared in The Indian Express on November 30, 2003. The Jury also took special note of her other entry "Bridging the Divide In This Small Town", The Indian Express, December 9, 2003, while coming to their decision. It is hardest to retain compassion while reporting on communally charged situations and decrying the violation of basic human rights. Yet Ms. Ramanujans writings display an outstanding quality of compassion, empathy and respect for human dignity. Mill On The Loss is an incisive report on the economic basis of communal hatred. This piece explores the socio-economic roots of communal tension in certain areas of Maharashtra.
