A letter to West Bengal CM condemning Taslima Nasreen's ouster from the state

To
Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee
Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal
Writers Building
Kolkata

Dear Sir,
We strongly condemn the action of the West Bengal Government in responding to the All India Minority Forum’s violence by hastily transporting Taslima Nasrin out of the state.

There is absolutely no justification for a government’s abdication of its own responsibility with regard to the safety and security of its residents.

It is a matter of deep distress that a government which stands for the sanctity of democratic and civil rights, and upholds the constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression and mobility, should have failed in its duty to safeguard these rights of an individual who is under threat from reactionary elements for whom all the above are dispensible.

We urge the government to ensure Taslima Nasrin’s safe passage and return to Bengal at the very earliest.
